Podcast #23: Educator Jamie Marantz

On last week’s podcast episode, everyone was happy to hear from Barbara Shreve, but several people clamored for more conversation about Code Switch’s podcast series on Ron Brown Preparatory High School and about #121’s article on Ballou High School in Washington DC.

For all of chomping at the bit, educator Jamie Marantz is here to rescue you. Jamie selected both pieces to focus on in this week’s episode of the podcast.

Jamie is an outstanding and experienced educator in the Bay Area who cares deeply about equity and instruction for those students who do not easily “fit the mold.”

On the show, we chat about her experience in school, her journey to become an educator, and her belief that the road toward education reform is as important as its goals.

If you’re an educator, or if you care about education, you’ll enjoy this episode!

Take a listen!

Podcast #22: Math educator Barbara Shreve

New Barbara.jpeg

Barbara Shreve is a wonderful Math educator in the Bay Area and an even better friend.

She has taught high school mathematics, written math textbooks, coordinated district math efforts, and is now working in improvement science.

Barbara has many talents, though, and one of them is journalism. On the show, we talked about our shared experience working on our high school newspaper, The Epitaph, which was transformative.

Later in the episode, we chatted about the Washington Post article in last week’s issue of The Highlighter. Though many people believe that the Post did the right thing rescinding its off-the-record policy in this case, Barbara had a different view. After listening to her reasoning, I was persuaded.

Podcast #20: Jonathan Wright & Philippe Vanier

We had not just one but two excellent podcast guests this week! And they’re both science teachers, which is also exciting.

Jonathan Wright teaches science at Impact Academy in Hayward, and Philippe Vanier teaches science in Salt Lake City, Utah.

They’re great colleagues and friends but differ politically. When you listen to the podcast, see if you can pick up on their views!

On the show, we talked about “Can Racism Be Stopped in the Third Grade?” which was last week’s lead article.

There’s plenty of good stuff in here, so take a listen! And if you’d like, feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts!

Podcast #19: Sonya Wang

I’m pleased to announce that Sonya Wang is this week’s guest on The Highlighter Podcast.

Sonya is a loving mom, a loyal subscriber to The Highlighter, and a devotee of Oakland, even though she currently lives in Oak Park, Illinois.

On the show, Sonya and I talked about choosing a school for her daughter, buying a house in the Bay Area, and living in the Deep South.

We also chatted about “I’m a black man who moved to the Deep South. Here’s what it’s teaching me about race,” which appeared in last week’s issue of the newsletter.

There’s plenty of good stuff in here, so take a listen! And if you’d like, feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts!
